Resources & Emphasis On Showing, Rather than Applying Restraint. On Risk, Restraint & Challenging Behaviour Reduction
I strongly recommend the “Holding Safely” Resource produced by SIRCC as one of the best, if not the best, guidance for services and managers related to the use of physically restraining children and young people. It can be found by visiting http://www.sircc.org.uk/library/practicepapers/holding_safely_complete

Emphasis on Team Teach courses is on restraint and risk reduction. See “Gold standard” template on the Home Page of the Team Teach web site for the areas that organisations should be considering. These standards will produce an action plan for managers.

The core theory activities on Team Teach courses need to be fully completed, then the learning and associated documentation applied within services by managers and staff. Perhaps the most vital aspect of this process is the “Listening and Learning” module. Without this being proactively supported in services it is unlikely that restraints will reduce or relationships improve. For services to receive the full support of Team Teach in any legal challenge, it is essential that they can demonstrate this process is / has been applied to support all individuals involved. It is too important not to make time for it.

Team Teach and its trainers are committed to providing participants with an interactive, interesting course, where learning although a serious subject, can still be fun, where key messages around “help script”, help protocol”, de-escalation are effectively conveyed, making a lasting impact on the widest range of learning styles; where even the physical activities themselves (body language, personal space) emphasise the need for team-work and to remain calm, caring; protecting the positive relationships and sense of safety and security that facilitates effective teaching and learning.
